Rebirth

Well, DC Universe: Rebirth is here! And The New 52 Adventures of Superman is here to talk about it!

This is also the first episode of the show in a long time, so there is a spoiler-free segment at the onset to talk about what the show is doing and where it's going, cuz believe me, stuff is happening. Then, after a clearly announced boundary, I dive into those elements of DC Universe: Rebirth that struck me as worth mentioning. I also ramble a bit about my thoughts on New 52 Superman as a whole now that we're on the back end of it.

Spoiler warnings in effect for the entirety of comics past, present, and future.

Then, be sure to be back here next week!

57 Light and Dark

This week, I'm still with Superboy as we follow him over to his super teen friends for Teen Titans Volume 4: Light and Dark, where Trigon makes his move and Raven joins the team. It's an apocalyptic slug fest that manages to illumine and frustrate at the same time. What do I mean by that? I guess you'll just have to listen to find out. Teen Titans Volume 4: Light and Dark collects Teen Titans 18-23.

56 Justin Jordan interview

This time out, I take a break from my story coverage to interview the writer of last week's Superboy arc, Justin Jordan. We discuss Superboy, his antagonists in the story, where the story might have gone, and the forces that kept it from going there. I thank Justin Jordan for his openness about his time on the book, and I hope you enjoy the interview!

In this latest episode of The New 52 Adventures of Superman, I take a look at our visitor from Earth 2, Kara Zor-El aka Karen Starr aka Super Girl aka Power Girl, as she and her partner the Huntress confront Desaad over the way he's destroyed her life recently, only to take a major knock to her ability to control her powers. Worlds' Finest Volume 3: Control Issues contains Worlds' Finest 13-18.

52 New 52 Lookback Panel Discussion

So this is big episode 52, and to celebrate this momentous occasion, I am taking a break from my usual coverage to take a look back at the New 52 as a phenomenon. You may think I hardly need a break cuz I've been so long without episodes, but this is the second of two episodes that I actually recorded a year ago, so there.

My guests on this episode are Paul French of the Legion of Substitute Podcasters podcast, Caleb Gerard of the Tales from the Longbox podcast, and Micheal Leyland of the Hey Kids Comics podcast. I strongly encourage following any or all of these shows as they have afforded me untold hours of listening pleasure. Thank you, fellas, for being on the show with me!

And thank you, the listener, for downloading and listening! See you in a week for BATMAN/SUPERMAN VOLUME 1: CROSS WORLD!!

It's been a year, but here is a new episode about New 52 Superman that, well, doesn't have a lot of Superman. I started this back in the day and wanted to finish it before putting out new episodes. So here's your chance to learn all about Earth 2 and its history both in the New 52 and in DC continuity as a whole! And yes, there's some Superman at the end, so don't worry. :)

Well, folks, here we are.  The final episode of the show, at least for the foreseeable future.  In this episode, Jon and Dave go through the extensive mailbag, bawl out the writer of a dumb review, and go through all the nooks and crannies of Action Comics 18.  We also take time to look back on the series and look ahead to the future of the Superman books.  We hope you enjoy it, and we want to thank each and every one of you who has supported the show through downloading, emailing, and/or telling a friend about us.  I don't think the reading experience of the New 52 adventures of Superman will quite be the same for any of us without this show, and we appreciate all of you who have been with us for the journey so far.

Charlie joins us one last time for this penultimate episode of The New 52 Adventures of Superman, as we take a look at Superman17, the epic conclusion to the landmark Superbooks crossover H'el on Earth!  At least, that's what we wish it were.  Turns out, it's not so epic and barely a conclusion, but we'll talk more about that on the show.  We also take a dig into the mail bag and read your emails for not quite the last time.

Everything is drawing to a close.  Next week, the final episode, covering Action Coimcs 18!

Superboy 15 -- "Shattered Steel!" -- Superboy's dying, and only Superman's armor can save him, but at what cost to the clone of steel?

Supergirl 15 -- "Into Kandor" -- What happens when H'el sends Supergirl into the last bastion of her home civilization?

Superman 15 -- "Because I'm a Scorpion" -- We wanted more Luthor, and we got more Luthor!

28 Supergirl Superman 12 Superman Annual 1

The first year is over.  The New 52 is firmly established and not going anywhere.  And we close this first year with a five-week month, which gives us our first Superman Annual.  Jon and Dave discuss that and the other Superbooks this month, including the following stories:

Supergirl 12 -- "Inheritance" -- Supergirl learns the truth of the only remaining Kryptonians, preserved in the bottle city of Kandor.  So then why is there a Kryptonian voice calling to her from the bottom of the sea?

Superman 12 -- "Home" -- The brief Dan Jurgens run comes to a close as Superman is confronted with a dilemma.  When our heroes are kidnapped by bad guys, they'll do anything to get home.  So why then is it bad for a kidnapped alien to use equal force to get away from its human captors?  This sparks some philosophical discussion and feelings on the run as a whole.

Superman Annual 1 -- "Atonement" -- Helspont's back, and you're gonna get in trouble.  Hey, Clark!  Hey, Clark!  Helspont's back!  Jon and Dave discuss Scott Lobdell's treatment of Superman's next confrontation with the big bad of the Wildstorm universe.

Also, Superboy helps Cassie in her struggle with the silent armor in Teen Titans 12.  And don't forget the Kiss That Launched A Thousand Blogs in Justice League 12 and its apparent ramifications in Justice League International Annual 1.

The New 52 Adventures of Superman will be having a special "look back" episode in the near future.  What are your thoughts on this first year as a whole?  How do the stories translate from month-to-month reading to whole arcs?  Send us an email with "Look back" in the title, and be a part of the conversation for that special episode!

27 Action Comics Superboy 12

The first year of The New 52 approaches its close with these two books from August.  Jon and Dave spend this episode looking at the following stories:

Action Comics 12 -- "Return of the Forgotten Superman" -- Grant Morrison's second act finds its end in this extra-long chapter, where Superman makes a huge shift in tone and power set and the identity of the true evil is revealed.  How will it all end?  And who does surgery with their thumbnails anyway?!

Superboy 12 -- "Night Games!" -- Tom DeFalco is the king of the book now, giving us his first solo chapter with no help from Scott Lobdell.  Where will our favorite Kryptonian clone go now that his driver has changed?  Let's find out together, shall we?

Also up is Worlds' Finest 4, with the Supergirl of Earth 2.  Come listen and let us know what you think!

Thanks so much for listening. We do hope you enjoy the show, "we" being Jon M. Wilson from Golden Age Superman and J. 26 Supergirl Superman 11

Wrapping up our conclusion of the 11s, Jon and Dave have come to this latest episode to discuss the following stories:

Supergirl 11 -- "Outsider" -- Supergirl is finally settling into a life, even goes on a first date, when everything is thrown off kilter by an attack from ... someone.  But more mysterious than the someone is WHO sent the someone.  But we have our ideas.

Superman 11 -- "Combat" -- The cover declares that in this issue we'll see the "secrets of the suit revealed."  ...Yeah, they probably shouldn't have promised that.  And Jon and Dave have a hard time getting past that disappointment to enjoy this issue, but what secrets DID we learn?

25 Action Comics Superboy 11

After a week off of our weekly releases, we are back to dive into the books that hit in July.  This episode is the first half of those, covering the following stories from Action Comics 11 and Superboy 11.

"Superman's New Secret Identity" -- Well, it's all in the name, isn't it?  Clark Kent is dead, and Superman has found a new way to spend his hours out of costume.  Meanwhile, the forgotten Superman returns and is ready to take over the world with the help of a six-year-old in pigtails.  What ever can Superman do to stop him?

"Clothes Encounter" -- We learn a bit more about how Superman got all those S-shield T-shirts, or do we?  We look at another of Sholly Fisch's vignettes that have helped these issues to leave an emotional impact.

"Brothers-in-Harm!" -- Kon and Miguel have to take care of the city's detritus, but what's Superboy doing with all that cash?  And what will his gay friend do to help him with girl problems?

We also have your latest heroine fix (note the "E") in Worlds' Finest 3, so come give a listen!

Thanks so much for listening. We do hope you enjoy the show, "we" being Jon M. Wilson from Golden Age Superman and J. David Weter of PADSmash!: An Incredible Hulk Podcast and Green Lantern's Light.  If you have thoughts on the books we cover or on our comments regarding them, please share them by writing an email or comment below.

24 Superboy Supergirl Superman 10

We are wrapping our review and analysis of the June issues in this episode, which include the following:

Superboy 10 -- "The Mysterious Mystery of Mystery Island!" -- Superboy and Wonder Girl find themselves on an enigma of an island after their escape from the Culling.  Dodging dinosaurs is easy for Superboy, though, compared to trying to make friends with the girl you tried to kill last week.

Supergirl 10 -- "Rescuer" -- Trapped in the magical realm of the Black Banshee, Supergirl meets a boy!

Superman 10 -- "Secrets & Lies" Part II -- Superman's secret identity has been revealed, endangering a family of innocents, as the Man of Steel learns how to deal with Anguish.

We also continue along The Villain's Journey in Justice League and see Superboy meet up with the rest of his new team in Teen Titans.  Come give a listen!

Thanks so much for listening. We do hope you enjoy the show, "we" being Jon M. Wilson from Golden Age Superman and J. 23 Action Comics 10

In this latest installment of The New 52 Adventures of Superman, Dave and Jon take a look at the first chapter of the next phase of Grant Morrison's Superman epic in the two stories of Action Comics 10:

"Superman: Bulletproof" -- The Little Man has sent Nimrod the Hunter after Clark Kent, and Clark knows it.  What is the ultimate solution Clark will find for this problem?  Suicide???

"Absent Friend" -- All those who knew Clark Kent gather to mourn his passing.  And Superman can only watch from the sidelines.

We also include Earth 2's Supergirl in the discussion with Worlds' Finest 2.  And Superman has a cameo in Stormwatch 10 as the centuries-old watch squad try to decide what to do with the growing super-hero problem.

Here it is, Superfriends!  At long last, the first big crossover involving the Superbooks -- THE CULLING!  From Teen Titans Annual 1, through Superboy 9 and Legion Lost 9, and then back to the finale in Teen Titans 9, Jon and Dave look at every well-planned, meticulously nuanced detail of this story.

And... it's not a pretty sight.  Fair warning.

20 Action Comics 9

Hello and welcome once again to The New 52 Adventures of Superman, your source for reviews and analysis of every appearance and adventure of Superman and his family of characters.  This time out, we begin looking at the books from May 2012, which includes the two following stories from Action Comics 9:

"The Curse of Superman" - Superman becomes whatever you want him to be. And now he's trying to destroy the world, but can he be stopped by the Superman of Earth-23?  And what does Morrison mean when he says this is Superman done right?

"Executive Power" - What conflicts would Superman face if he were president?  When does saving the world fall outside the purview of that office, and will Superman cross that line?

Also, this episode begins coverage of a new side title featuring Supergirl from Earth 2, trapped with Robin on a parallel world and forced to take on the new costumed identities of Power Girl and the Huntress.  We also stop briefly on Earth 2 itself to see the fate of their home and its Superman.  All this and your emails too!

19 Superboy Supergirl Superman 8

Finishing up the final month before Wave Two brings new titles to the show, Jon and Dave are here in this latest episode to discuss the following stories.

Superboy 8 -- "Training Day" -- Our shortest coverage of any comic ever.  Seriously, you might be done with it before you finish reading this post.  Listen to find out why.

Supergirl 8 -- "Girl in the World" -- It's the start of a whole new story arc, and poor Kara hasn't had a chance to catch her breath.  And that doesn't change before Supergirl finds herself caught up in the mysterious world of Siobhan Smythe.  And does our silver-haired Scot have eyes for a certain Kryptonian?

Superman 8 -- "The Outsider Option" -- Superman finds himself in a Metropolis that hates and fears him.  Didn't we just do this bit in the previous arc?  But of course there is more to it all than meets the eye.

All this, plus Superman's involvement in Justice League 8 and some pre-Culling talk with Teen Titans 8 and Legion Lost 8.

Thanks so much for listening. We do hope you enjoy the show, "we" being Jon M. Wilson from Golden Age Superman and J. We also answer your emails and have a few things to say about some of the upcoming future creators on the books.  And if you listen to the end, you might even hear some thoughts on a certain other S-named superhero who might have had a movie recently.

17 Supergirl Superman 7

The New 52 Adventures of Superman continue this week with Supergirl 7 and Superman 7!  Plus, the new modern-day Steve Trevor series starts up in a book called Justice League 7, with an appearance from Superman.  And the not-so-amazing opening arc of Batman: The Dark Knight wraps with issue 7, also including a minor Superman appearance.  But here are the main stories of the episode:

Supergirl 7 -- "Graduation Day" -- The opening arc of the Maid of Might comes to an action-packed finish as Supergirl faces off with the four World-Killers with the fate of Manhattan resting squarely on her teenage shoulders!

Superman 7 -- "To Hel and Back" -- The Daemonite saga running throughout various corners of the DCU comes to Superman as he is captured by Helspont in this first issue from the new creative team of Jurgens and Giffen.

Thanks so much for listening. We do hope you enjoy the show, "we" being Jon M. Wilson from Golden Age Superman and J. 16 Superboy 7

This week on The New 52 Adventures of Superman, Jon and Dave are joined by Rennie Cowan of the Superboy Theater website.  Superboy 7 and Teen Titans 7 bring the N.O.W.H.E.R.E. storyline to a head before diving into The Culling, so we give both books an in-depth analysis and do a little bit of a look back at the road that has brought us here.

Superboy 7 -- "Untamed Rose!" -- Superboy brings the fight to N.O.W.H.E.R.E., and Rose is there at the door to fend him off.  Who will win? Who will lose? And who, exactly, is Harvest?

Teen Titans 7 -- "Assault on Project 13" -- Not sure exactly what a Project 13 is, but Superboy is the goal of the Titans' rescue mission.  Only things don't exactly go well.

The episode is admittedly a tad off-format, but the point we've reached in this story merited a concerted look at both titles, and as a Superboy fan, we want to thank Rennie for bringing a lot of great insight.  So come check out the episode!

14 Superboy Supergirl Superman 6

Welcome back to another fantastic episode of New 52 Superadventures!  In this episode, Dave and Jon wrap their coverage of the 6s with the following books:

Superboy 6 -- "Not So Super" -- It's a classic case of Boy meets Girl, Girl doesn't speak English, Girl finds out Boy is a clone, Girl punches boy into space.  Your traditional not-so-love story, in other words.  Looks like they're laying seeds for the big Superman books crossover we were promised for this summer.  Wait, isn't summer here?  WHERE'S OUR CROSSOVER??

Supergirl 6 -- "The End of the Beginning" -- Supergirl's opening origin arc is nearing a close as she meets ghosts of her parents and follows Reign back to Earth to stop her from ... well, reigning it.  All the pieces are in place for next month's knock down, drag out brawl.  So long as Reign shuts up long enough for the fight to happen.

Superman 6 -- "The Measure of a Superman" -- It's the final chapter of George Pérez's run on the title as we find out just what's been going on all this time, leaving us secure in the knowldege of ... wait, what HAS been happening all this time?

Heckling aside, there was some good stuff this month.  Mostly.  And we also take some time to look at the end of "Origin" in Justice League 6 and the Superman guest spot in Batman: The Dark Knight 6.  All right here, all just for you!

Thanks so much for listening. We do hope you enjoy the show, "we" being Jon M. Wilson from Golden Age Superman, J. David Weter of PADSmash!: An Incredible Hulk Podcast and Green Lantern's Light, as well as Michael Kaiser from the newly revived Legends of the Batman.  If you have thoughts on the books we cover or on our comments regarding them, please share them by writing an email or comment below.

11 Superman 5

That's right.  You get three episodes to wrap up this month's New 52 Superawesomness, as Jon, Dave, and Mike (or is that Mike, Dave, and Jon?) tackle the final week of the month with:

Superman 5 -- "Menace!" -- It looks like Superman done flipped his top now, don't it?  What havoc will the Man of Steel wreak before he can be stopped?  And more importantly, can sound travel in space?!

We also take a look at the penultimate chapter of the new Justice Leage origin and the grand showdown between Superboy and the Teen Titans.  Oh, yeah, and Superman also kills Batman in Batman: The Dark Knight.  All the 5s get wrapped up on this episode, so come check it out!

10 Superboy Supergirl 5

For the second of three episodes this month, Jon, Dave, and Mike are going to be looking at the fifth issue of each Superteen title.

Superboy 5 -- "Breakout" -- Before heading out to beat on Wonder Girl, Superboy wants to save Caitlin Fairchild.  But why?  What's his motivation?  Can we figure out what Lobdell is trying to say?

Supergirl 5 -- "Homecoming" -- Kara goes home and finds nothing but death and destruction.  And a big ugly who beats on her.  What happened to them?  What does it all mean?  And who shot Zor-El?

The length of the discussion for the non-Action titles this month was lengthy enough that Jon felt a cut was in order.  The episodes are left a touch on the short side compared to usual, but that's better than super-long for some people, so here it is.  Look for the rest in a week.

09 Action Comics 5

It begins -- again!  The New 52 Adventures gang is here to discuss the new origin of Superman as presented in Action Comics 5, and this time they bring a friend along in the person of Michael Bailey of From Crisis to Crisis: A Superman Podcast, Tales of the Justice Society of America, and Radio KAL Live!, as well as staff writer at the Superman Homepage!

"Rocket Song" -- It may be the seventeenth origin that Superman has gotten in the last year and a half (or something like that), but we loved it anyway.  The question is, why did it have to happen smack in the middle of another story?  We have the hash and dash on all that as well as some comparisons with previous versions of the.

"Baby Steps" -- Wow, did this story catch us all by surprise, and it gives a chance for four men to share their feelings.  But don't let that frighten you!

You'll also get Michael Bailey's opinions on the New 52 relaunch as a whole and the other Superman books in particular, with some solid appreciation of Serinda Swan mixed in for good measure.  Come give it a listen!

Supergirl 4 -- "Escape" -- Supergirl finally gets away from her captor and heads off to find her destiny.  And witness the birth of Torso Man!

"Free at Last, Free at Last" -- Superboy finds his first taste of freedom and runs across a lava woman.  Who is the third DNA source she mentions, and did she serve any other purpose to the story than to mention this?

"Memento" -- Supergirl follows Luke Skywalker's practice droid up to Mr. Tycho's space station, but will she be able to resist Tycho's Brain??

"A Cold Day in Hell" -- Clark's secret admirer is whisked away in a whirlwind of alien possession, and Superman has to save him.  And guest artist Nicola Scott makes him look great while doing it.  But just how many alien possession elementals does Pérez have up his sleeve?

Rounding up the second month of Superman comics in The New 52:

Supergirl 2 -- "Reunion" -- Kara's shocked to see her little baby cousin all growed up, so she punches him.  A lot.  And we ask the pointed questions, like what exactly is that guy holding in the last panel?

Superman 2 -- "Flying Blind" -- Superman is attacked by a monster he can't see.  Will we ever see Superman smile again?

Plus discussion of Justice League 2 and Teen Titans 2, though the TT talk is about as brief as Superboy's one-page involvement in the book.

Here's where it all begins, folks.  The New 52 Adventures of Superman is a podcast dedicated to covering every adventure of Superman and his family of characters as they are currently being published as part of DC Comics -- The New 52!  This episode is the first half of the coverage for the September books.  With introductions and preliminaries, plus the vast amount of material to cover in the issue, this first episode only covers Action Comics 1, plus the minor Superman appearances in Justice League 1 and Swamp Thing 1.  The rest of the September books, Superboy 1, Supergirl 1, and Superman 1 will be coming your way in two short weeks.

We do hope you enjoy the show, "we" being Jon M. Wilson from Golden Age Superman, J. David Weter of PADSmash!: An Incredible Hulk Podcast and Green Lantern's Light, as well as Michael Kaiser, coming out of retirement after having been involved with a couple different shows in months gone.  If you have thoughts on the books we cover or on our comments regarding them, please share them by writing an email or comment below.

Next episode due January 15
